Story Elements

We have been working on story elements in class for the past week or so. We will continue this coming week as well. Next week is our Curriculum Fair, so I have been trying to turn most of our activities into craftivities so that our room looks great for parents next week. Here are some of the things we have done. You can get it HERE from Teacher Pay Teachers!

Poetry and Main Idea

For the past few weeks we have been working on Poetry and Main Idea. Here are some of the things we have done.

In preparation for Earth Day, we read The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry. Then we discussed the Main Idea of the story and supporting details.

This super cute craftivity came from Amy Lemmons' What's The Main Idea unit on TPT.

We also read the book Matthew and Tilly, a long standing favorite, and made these SUPER cute jerseys to show our understanding of Main Idea and Details. Again, this came from What's The Main Idea.

Now on to Poetry! Poetry Month is in full swing in our classroom. We began by working on Acrostic Poems. Here is a sample of some awesome work.
Some of the kids had some tricky letters in their names. So we busted out those dictionaries for help!

We also delved into similes and made these Simile Namebows. I got this idea from Hope King at Second Grade Shenanigans.
This little guy had some of my favorite similies. I'm as quiet as a statue. I'm as short as a penguin.

Anchor Charts

Here are some of the anchor charts for reading and math that I have around my room at the moment.

Yes, I did make them all and then have them laminated for use each school year.

No, I cannot take credit for the content. They are a mix of things that I found on Pinterest over the last 2 years.

Rainy Days!

Whew! It has been pouring rain all day today, so of course I had to to throw out my carefully laid plans and throw in some rainy day plans!

Here is a little craftivity I threw together today while the kids were at lunch. The loved it!

You can get this little Rainy Day Umbrella Craftivity here.

I also pulled out my Rainy Days Math Centers. You can grab those here.

Here the kids are in action. Each of the folders have the task cards and recording sheets. The kids just open it up and have at it.

Dr. Seuss

Yes! It is really late! Here is just one of the craftivities that the kids did to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. We made -ocket creatures to go in pockets! SO stinking cute.
